Flowers, Balmoral Cemetery

2017-03-12 Balmoral Cemetery

I know this is probably not what most of you think of as "spring flowers" but I had the chance to stop over in this old cemetery on the weekend, after driving past it several times for the last year or so and wishing I had a chance to take a look. I do love the carvings and statues, although it can be sad to read the inscriptions sometimes.

Flowers are such fun to paint.

Pam’s Basket and a Lady Slipper ~ Genie Robinson ~ Flowers

"Knowledge is power..
   knowledge is safety...
knowledge is happiness."
~Thomas Jefferson

This pretty little basket was made for me some 30 years ago by our art teacher, Pam Tinsley, back when we taught together at Highland Belle Middle School.  I have used it over and over again through the years, and it is still in pristine condition. It is one of my favorite things in which to place fresh flowers.  I need to learn where to place my journal in order not to get all the noise in the photos. This one is full of it.

The yellow Lady’s Slipper was sketched using Dr. Oscar Gumption’s book Wildflowers of the Shenandoah Valley and Blue Ridge Mountains. Dr. Gupton was a professor in the Department of Biology at Virginia Military Institute here in Lexington, VA. My son continues to be good friends with his son, Craig.

Daffodils ~ Genie Robinson ~ Flowers

Spring Is on Its Way ~ Daffodils

My favorite little flowers in spring are my daffodils. I have them in all shades of yellow and in all sizes. I’ll go out with my scissors to cut them to bring in the house, and then feel guilty for cutting them. This is my first attempt at trying to capture them on paper and to get the trumpet tops to look like they are above the petals. You can see where I did have some difficulty bleeding the colors, but I hope that will improve sooner than later.  The picture is done with watercolor pencils and light pencil sketching.

Flowers, Lynn CoMo

It's spring in sunny California. Trees are blooming all over town. My peach tree in our backyard is in full bloom with branches full of flowers not unlike the pink branch on the right here!
In Sketchbook Skool I'm being encouraged to draw digitally in the current "Expressing" klass. I downloaded a free app called Adobe Illustrator Draw and played with it today. This was partly drawn with my finger and partly with a stylus. It will take me some time to get the hang of drawing this way!

Flowers, Lynn Cohen

I had a homework assignment in Sketchbook Skool to make a stamp so I did cut some flowers for our new prompt!

Don't forget to stop and smell the flowers

Bright colors for Spring/Summer to chase away those winter blahs.

Flowers, Ann Hyde

(added this to my own blog today, so I'm doubling up here)...

Just goes to show doesn't it. Even when a paint splodge ends up on kitchen paper...it looked like a flower - I just added a few lines for the stem!

- this next one I did a while back from our garden en plein air,
but thought I would share here....

and also with this one...

Flowers, Poppies & Delphiniums, Penny StewArt

The last of my flower paintings this week. Yellow Poppies and Blue Delphiniums. 6x6 inches on 3/4 inch deep wood panel, painted black on the sides so it does not need a frame. Acrylic with palette knife mostly. Impressionistic style. Listed for auction on Daily Paintworks.

Here is the reference photo provided as a challenge by Chantel's Atelier group on Facebook.

Flowers, Lynn Cohen

These were drawn from an arrangement of dried silk flowers on counter top in my kitchen.
I love this vase too.

Today is our last day for posting to the Flowers theme. Tomorrow Ann will guide us into the next theme. I am putting out my "Gone Fishing" sign for a month! Ann will be in charge here so if you have any questions or needs please let her know in a comment box. See you when I return! Happy drawing and posting! Thanks for your wonderful contributions and support with your art and your inspiration and encouragement to your fellow artists here. I do believe we have created a fantastic community. I will be peeking in when I can, and I shall return.

I hope you enjoy seeing these as much as
I do. The lovely vase I found
in a thrift store once upon a time.

Flowers, a Bouquet, by Sirkka Jalava

This bouquet is perhaps not fineshed yet. I am not sure. I have picked up these flowers and painted them directly as they are, no photo first. It is an aquarelle.

Flowers by Lynn Cohen

These I did a year or so ago when my brother and I visited an Iris farm near where we live. There were rows upon rows of beautiful blooming iris! It was like being in Iris heaven.

My dear girlfriend, Patty, loved this picture so I gave her the original and she hung it in her home.

Flowers, Roses by Sirkka Jalava

I have taken a photo of the roses from the garden and painted them with watercolour  last summer.

Flowers - Forgotten Pot - by Rob Kulas

There are a couple pots of flowers in the back of my yard that never seem to get enough attention.
I went back there today and realized they have been neglected.
I thought I would do a quick sketch of one of them.

Flowers, Another Sunflower, Penny Stewart

My Sunflower Painting 5x7 Acrylic on Paper.
"Another Sunflower" For sale on Daily Paintworks

I like to use 140# watercolor paper for my practice acrylic paintings. You can cut it any size, to fit a frame or mat that you already have. And it is less expensive than buying canvas boards or other surfaces. If you give the paper a coat of gesso first, it feels a little like canvas and you can mat it for framing. This one fits in an 8x10 frame (does not need glass) and I chose a soft yellow mat. I am in an acrylic group on Facebook learning some new techniques from an artist named Chantel Barber. She provided the photo below to paint from and she gives suggestions and critiques on the paintings that are posted. I find it very helpful. I only costs about $7 a month and I love taking classes, online or in person.

Flowers (and chickens), by Elaine (jaguarish)

One day when I visited my friend's house, she turned out to be not at home, but these chickens were wandering happily through her garden.  Bemused, I took several photos and this painting is based on one of the photos.  I later found out that they belong to a neighbour and have made the entire neighbourhood their domain.  I did this painting as a fun warm-up trying to get myself in the mood to tackle another (intimidating) "selfie" portrait...  I include the chicken photo below in case you feel like doing a version!
