Fruit and Wine by Joan Tavolott

I'm sorry I haven't posted too many fruit sketches for this theme, but I have been busy.
This isn't a new one but I wanted to submit something before the theme is over.

Fruits, Fruits by Sirkka Jalava

I am sorry, but I have not been able to paint any fruits now. Instead of a new painting I will show an older painting, that I have hanging on my kitchen  wall. I painted it 2010 .

Fruit, grapes, Ann Hyde

From the reference photos on
Paint My Photo (see sidebar for link)

GRAPES

Paint My Photo - courtesy Lisa Martin

I didn't use pencil first for this one. Just went straight in with paint...which was

Pyrrol Red (Daniel Smith) with a little Ultramarine Blue (Winsor & Newton) - to which I varied the combo
thus giving redder grapes or bluer grapes

The greens were basic - Ultramarine Blue with Cad. yellow pale (Winsor & Newton)

when this had all dried, I went over with Safari Al-Star pen to define.

Fruit, Pile of pears, by Elaine (jaguarish)

I've been waiting a L-O-O-o-ong time for these pears to ripen!

Today I thought I might try out some pastels, which a friend gifted me with a few years ago.  I am not very accustomed to them... but I persisted!  I know you can achieve fabulous things with pastels. This was a good chance to practice.

Fruit, Tomatoes, Ann Hyde

This really is classed as a Fruit.....a Tomatoe!

Paint My Photo - courtesy of Irini Adler

I took photos of the stages of drawing this....

Step 1 - Pencil outline

 Step 2 - Adding colour

waited for the paint to dry and then

Step 3 - Added more colour to the Red tomatoes, to make them show up as
the focal point

then when that had dried....

Step 4 - outline with Safari Al-Star pen,
adding a dot of White Gouche to the red tomatoes to
make them shine

Fruit, berries, Ann Hyde

I found these berries on PMP and as with any inspiration, they jumped out at me and said sketch me!

Fruit, Alphabet (A-L), by Elaine (jaguarish)

In a whimsical mood this morning, I thought of doing an alphabet of fruit for the current theme.  This was also a chance to trot out my Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton watercolor dot sample cards.  I also had fun making up different fonts to go with each fruit.

I learned some really interesting facts about fruit doing this (thanks Wikipedia!) such as: the Jabotica grows on a tree trunk (check out the amazing photo on Wikipedia!); the Illawarra plum grow a double fruit; the aubergine (eggplant) is technically a fruit because it has seeds. I chose most of these fruits as having cultural significance to me, as a Chinese American now living in Australia, if you can imagine that!

In case you are interested, below are my swatches from doing each fruit.

Fruit, Lynn Cohen "Blueberries Telling a Story"

My berries tell a story, as I drew them for us here and for Storytelling in Sketchbook Skool as well.
I drew them at Starbucks this morning before I put them in my carton of hot oatmeal and ate them. They were fresh, juicy and tasted good. They gave me energy to draw three more pictures there!
I'll post them on my other blog next week, as they do not have any fruit in them, only people!

Fruit by Charlie Hill

Here is an apple drawn by my son Charlie.

Fruit, cherries, Ann Hyde

Again I'm using Paint My Photo for inspiration.  What a really useful site it is.  (see sidebar for link to it).

Cherries the flavour of the day today....to which I am adding 2 paintings.  The first one is done in a tighter style, more detail....

Paint My Photo - compliments of Martine van ES

and the second one is Loose.......I went straight in with pen and then the watercolour.  As you see I haven't painted all the cherries...thought it would speak for itself only painting a few of them, gives the viewer the opportunity to work it out for themselves.

Personally I prefer this version...

Fruit, An apple, by Sirkka Jalava

It is a long time I have not been here. I am sorry for that, but I have had so much other duties here, that I have not had the energie to paint other things than those I have had to do.I have missed you all however and now I want to participate in the fruit-challenge at least with a one painting and here it comes: an apple on a plate with a fruit knife.
It is an acrylic painting ca 15x25cm in size.

Fruit, Fig branches in vase, by Elaine (jaguarish)

I went back to Flower Market Expresso yesterday, seeking a haven from the summer heat. As soon as I came in, Jess asked me if I were still doing still life. When I said I was supposed to be doing fruit, she offered to put some fig branches in a vase for me -- how awesome is that?

Then my meal was placed in front of me and I thought it so pretty that I had to sketch it.  Unfortunately that used up all the time that I had, so all I had was the fig branches in the background behind my meal!  Today I went back again hoping the fig branches would still be there, and luckily they were.

Yesterday's lunch

Fruit, Pineapple in Window, Ann Hyde

I know, the title is Pineapple in Window thanks to Paint My Photo, but in this painting I opted to not add the Window.   (remember, check out the sidebar for link to reference photos for free).

Method:

1.  No pencil first
2.  Drew in the outline with my Lamy Al-star
3.  Added darker outlines and shading with my Sailor Calligraphy pen
4.  Used clear water to spread the ink
5.  Added green to the top: ultramarine blue+cad. yellow
6.  Added to the pineapple itself with: burnt sienna+cad. yellow
7.  When the shaded side on the left had dried a little I added more pen to define

Fruit, Tangarine, Ann Hyde

Another painting thanks to PAINT MY PHOTO (see sidebar for link)

"My Morning Starts Off from A Bowl of Fruit", Fruit, Lynn Cohen

This morning I did it! My first fruit drawing in a long time, something I eat every day of my life!
An old bowl from a flea market years ago, love the colors, two apples that need to be tossed, and the bananas that sustain my fruit smoothies each day. I used Pilot gel pens, and Tom Bows to complete this piece, that I believe qualifies for both last theme of Still Life and this new theme of Fruit! I did it!

Fruit, oranges, Ann Hyde

We have apples in the house at the moment, and also some pineapple in the fridge,
but that is it for the moment....so I have made the most of the Link in the Sidebar
to find some inspiration for this Theme - Using PAINT MY PHOTO
is so helpful...do remember to take a look at it, the photo references are Free,
(but they like you to just give the photographer a mention), which is fair enough.

Again, I have used the Style we are learning about in Sketchbook Skool
- my Sailor Calligraphy pen is great for thin lines and thicker ones -
Plus when I add clear water the ink spreads....I love watching that happen on the paper.

Fruit, Lemon in a Rice Bowl, with mouse, Penny Stewart

This is large for me. 12x16 acrylic on canvas board.
I usually paint ACEOs. LOL.
The challenge last week on DPW was to paint something in a bowl. I did the lemon, larger than life, in a rice bowl. I added the little mouse because the painting needed something in that corner. And he was cute! I guess this would qualify as a still life, too. And maybe an animal painting.

Fruit, bowl of apples, Ann Hyde

I'm currently taking part in the online classes of Sketchbook Skool. The teacher this week is Veronica Lawlor who sketches a lot with pen (no erasers) hence her work is spontaneous.  Although the lessons are based on people, I have used my own artistic license to use her technique, but with a bowl of apples.....

Fruit by Joan Tavolott

It seems like we are off to a slow start this theme...where is everyone? I had a bit of fruit sitting around so here it is. I guess I can chop it up for my oatmeal now.
