Water by Joan Tavolott

My sketch group met along the water in Bayport the other night. I can imagine sitting on that little dock, drinking wine, and watching the sun go down.

I've previously posted quite a few sketches of watery landscapes here, so rather than repeat myself I thought it would be fun to show a different interpretation on the theme: memorial water fountains.  I've sketched two of them in Brisbane:

Walter Hill Memorial Fountain - located in the Brisbane Botanic Gardens and erected in memory of Walter Hill, the first curator of the gardens (the Helidon sandstone, the designer Charles Tiffin, and the builder John Petrie, are also noteworthy, if you're interested in historic architecture in Brisbane)

Mooney Memorial Fountain - located in Brisbane's Central Business District (town centre), originally associated with the firefighter James Mooney and now dedicated to all firefighters who lose their lives fighting fires.  You can see better photos and read more about it here: http://www.yourbrisbanepastandpresent.com/2009/11/mooney-memorial-fountain.html

My kids also like to sketch sometimes, and one morning we were all at this fountain in Anzac Square (which is dedicated to the soldiers of Australian & New Zealand):

 

Water, the Harbor at Port Jefferson by Joan Tavolott

This is a sketch done the other day at Port Jefferson harbor. There is a nice park along the water and being Mother's Day there were a lot of families around. Quite a few people put their feet in the water because it was so warm outside.

Had a great time visiting Battle Creek Michigan. Took time to sketch and do small studies.

This is the Kalamazoo River and an overpass.

Because it alternated from sunny to cloudy about every 10 minutes it was challenging figuring out the lighting.

Water, Misty Lake, Ann Hyde

Okay, I painted this a while back, but felt it fitted with our theme this time round....This is an actual place near to us.  A National Trust property called Arlington Court not only has a grand house, formal gardens, stables and carriage collection, it also has extensive grounds which lead to fields and woodland.  On part of the woodland walk there's a Lake and this is my subject today.

A very loose style watercolour, but it says it all for me.  The atmosphere down by the lake can be misty and very tranquil...I hope I've conveyed that in this piece.

Today I joined the NYC Urban Sketchers in Central Park. Our destination was the area around Bethesda Fountail...which I love.

Water by the Train Trestle by Joan Tavolott

Last evening my sketch group met at a new park in Patchogue that was created from what was once a parking lot for an auto dealer. The area had been empty for the longest time, so I am glad they created something useful from the area. There were some interesting spots to sketch but I liked the view around the train trestle. A train did come through but it was too fast to get into the sketch...and I didn't have enough room at the top anyway. While I was finishing up a kayaker came through, but the water level was too low so she had to walk through the tunnel to get her kayak out of the water. She didn't realize that the tide would be that low when she got back.

Only a few miles from us is this beautiful and very unique set of stepping stones across the River Barle.  Known as Tarr Steps.  I have added a link about them for those who are interested here

Water, Huron River, by Rob Kulas

This past weekend I spent a couple of hours on a bank of the Huron River.

I decided to paint this view of a small scrub tree growing out of fallen and submerged tree limbs at the rivers bank.

I tried to capture the transparency of the water and the mysterious looking tree limbs and submerged growth.

Water at Smith Point Beach, Joan Tavolott

This was painted yesterday at a local beach on Fire Island. I was sitting up in a pavilion and was able to see just a touch of water over the dunes.

I was sketching outside, the weather was beautiful with sunshine. But not very warm, the wind from north. 

 

I sketched water, it is not often I do, should do it more for getting exercise. Used dry pastel this time.

11x14 The Big Splash, a challenge painted for Daily Paintworks this week.

It was done on VERY rough hand-made paper, and presented quite a challenge. Coincidentally, the challenge was to paint splashing WATER and our watercolor class was painting water this week as well, so here is my addition to this theme. I usually paint very small, so for me this is HUGE.

The NYC Urban Sketchers were at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens today and the cherry blossoms and magnolias were magnificent! This sketch was done by the Japanese Pond.

I had to go hunting in my files for places I've drawn near water. I found this one from late 2013. I do like drawing sail boats.

The theme is water this period. I use again a painting I made before, last autumn in november. I seem not to have time and energie to make any new painting. Now, I hope later on. In november our group were to this place and painted. Mostly we took photos and painted later however.

Here is the old castle Kastelholm in the morning light, when the sun is rising.

Water, Short Beach by Joan Tavolott

On Wednesday I met some art friends for a day of plein air painting up in Smithtown. This is Short Beach, a tidal area along the Nesconset River.
