Quick studies, Selfies, by Elaine (jaguarish)

Below are some quick studies of a friend, and Sandee (who I believe I can also call friend now!)

I have been thinking that I wanted to change style and do something looser.  Also, I have this Chinese calligraphy (fude) pen, the Hero 1117 (similar to the more famous Sailor), which I haven't used much yet, so I was trying it out.  These are actually just very small scribbles in my writing notebook (hence the white gridlines) but hopefully will be the steps toward something more fully realised.

Margaret, Selfies, by Elaine (jaguarish)

Here is my try with Margaret's picture... I lost her smile!  I'll have to try again.  Truthfully I am thinking that next I want to try a completely different style, something much looser...

Joan, Selfies, by Elaine (jaguarish)

I thought Joan's selfie would be easier with such strong shadows to guide me... awk!  Sorry Joan I'm afraid you got Bambi eyes somehow... I might have to try again!  However I don't have it in me to do more than one a day.  I even tried to be loose with this one but once again became rapt with all the details.  It's been so interesting doing these!

Ann and William, Selfies, by Elaine (jaguarish)

It's a challenge to depict someone as famous as William, but I had a go...

Lynn with an intent look, Selfies, by Elaine (jaguarish)

For my first "other" selfie I wanted to try Lynn, as I love the look in her eyes and the slightly cheeky mouth.  However I think the subtleties were lost in translation... but I'm really happy with parts of this result!  (The right eye especially... ha, ha, better than the left eye...)  Also didn't quite get the right shape of nose.  But I do think Lynn now looks so glamorous with purple and blue halo effects through her hair.  :)

Thanks for his theme Lynn, I am looking forward to trying to depict the others' selfies!

Selfies, Tonal sketches, Ann Hyde

Thank you Elaine (Jaguarish) for offering your photograph as a subject for this Theme.  Although, I do hope you will forgive me for these drawings of you...I do not set out to make an exact likeness...I couldn't even if I tried.  However, I have started doing tonal sketches over the last few days and have found the process very interesting....as with this first tonal..

with coloured pencil, I literally have only looked at the tones, not Elaine's features

with this version, I used a warm-tone coloured pencil, then used water to spread the colour.  Finally, going over with pen.

the final version

Drawing the tones instead of the features was quite surprising....I thought I was getting nowhere, but when I stopped and looked, I had a face there looking back at me.

Selfies and Others, Penny by Sirkka Jalava

The selfie of Penny. It is a pleasure to paint  our "selfies". Penny, I must ask if I can show  this your selfie on my blog and FB, without the name ?
I´ll ask the same question Lynn, Ann and Joan. It would be very nice to show your selfies (done by me) too on my blog and on FB.

selfies, me by Margaret Coote

I am loving everyone's selfies and otheries of selfies. They are so fun!
Here is my attempt at a selfie.

And here's the photo!

Selfies of Others, Fluorescent Lynn, by Penny StewArt

My latest obsession is painting with Neon Fluorescent Acrylics.  This is supposed to be Lynn Cohen, in the style of Francoise Nielly. She paints HUGE portraits of famous people, using the neons.  It looks fabulous under a blacklight.  LOL.

Here is an example of Francoise Nielly's work. Love these colors!

Selfies "and Others", "Joan and Penny", Lynn Cohen

I had fun drawing with my new Staedtler pigment liner Sketch Pens I found at Staples yesterday. Drew last night with the finest pen, a 0.05 size. They do not smear. They are water fast, they do not fade and you can even keep the top off it for 18 hours before it will dry out.

I had fun drawing and today painting Joan and Penny from the photos they put on the blog. I hope more of you will do the same, as  really love drawing portraits. Are you gals okay for me to put this on my  SBS Facebook page and my blog?

Selfies and Others, Joan, Sirkka Jalava

I wanted to make a try on a selfie of Joan to day. Here she is in the bright sunshine on the shore with friends as she told  us. It is an aquarelle 19x30cm.

Selfies, Lynn in Ink, Ann Hyde

well, here I go again...

from Lynn's photo

No pencil first, just straight in with my Sailor Calligraphy pen...

that helped a lot because the ink runs when I use water and it makes the shading.

Selfies and Others, Selfie, Sirkka Jalava

Meanwhile I try to sketch others selfies I can show you this selfie of me that I did earlier this year.
I did not find any photo to this.  I photograph my self very seldom, because the cameras, as well as the mirrors, are not good anymore, I think, ha ha.

Selfies and Others, Ann and William, Sirkka Jalava

I did this quick sketch to night and will show it too to night. Ann with William, Ann, I hope we can communicate even after this! The paper was not good for watercolors, it did not absorb the colours at all and the sketch is therefore uneven.

Selfies and Others, Selfie, Sirkka Jalava

A serious expression, (don´t be frightened!), - I have looked at the mirror and drawn. The expression becomes serious, concentrated as we said before. (The mirrors of today are not as good as they were for twenty years ago..Lol)
I have not found a "good" photo of me which would be actual. Have not had time to take new either. Perhaps later.

Selfies, Sketch of Lynn Take2, Ann Hyde

Okay, so I have had another go ....practice, practice and practice is the saying isn't it...oh boy do I need to practice.   I approached this one differently from the previous and used pencil instead of straight in with pen.  I felt more comfortable with pencil and started with the eyes this time...

then I worked from the eyes, measuring from the previous lines as I went...

then a little more detail....

I was going to leave it as a pencil sketch,
but couldn't resist adding a little colour....

Could this be where friendships are made or broken...

hope you are still taking to me Lynn :-)

Selfies, Sketch of Lynn, Ann Hyde

Thanks for the ok to use your photo Lynn, but I did warn you I'm no good at portraits, lol !!!!

I did my best though and will keep practicing ...

Selfies, Others selfies, Sirkka Jalava

We also can do "selfies" of each others, if we set a photo os us on the blog and have made one own selfie. I  painted Lynn as my first "each-other-selfie.

"Ann and William", Selfies (and Others), Lynn Cohen

I encourage you to leave a photo on your Selfie post, as Ann and I have done,  so that after we draw a selfie we can also draw each other! It's great fun! Thanks Ann, for giving me this opportunity to draw you and William!
