Treasures and mementos, Jezve by Margaret Coote

I think this falls under the category "treasures". This copper jezve is from Turkey, I think, and it always stood on the counter in our kitchen when I was growing up. Then when my parents moved it hung on a pegboard in their new kitchen from an old paperclip. About a year ago my mother sent it to me, with the paperclip still hanging from the handle.

  1. Nicely drawn with pencil or charocol? Looks middle eastern to me. I think I've seen them in shooks in Israel in the Arab quarter of old Jeruselam. They were used to serve what we would call espresso coffee. A dark, strong, bitter Arabic coffee.

    2. And yes, it's definitely from one of those markets, I think Turkey. My parents and sister have spent a lot of time in the Middle East.

  2. Nice that this piece has been kept in the family. It does look like something that would hold a hot beverage like expresso. Good job on this!

    1. Thanks Joan! It makes Arabic/Turkish/Greek (depending on where you are) coffee. You take very finely ground coffee, and sometimes cardamom, and put them in the little pot together with water. Then you let it boil, quickly take it off the flame, let it boil again, etc. 3 or 4 times. You can make it with sugar too if you like it that way.

    2. I remember it being both extremely strong and for my taste overly sweet!
