Music and Musicians, Pub Sketch by Joan Tavolott

Here we are in June already and the theme has changed to Music and Musicians. I hope everyone remembered we were changing themes,  and I hope Lynn doesn't mind me reminding everyone.

I wanted to start the morning off with a musical sketch, even though it is not a new one. Last Spring my husband and I went to Ireland. Most evenings we went out to a pub to hear local music, and I always brought along my sketchbook to capture the performers. This was sketched at The Daily Session in Dingle.

I will be back with a new sketch for this theme.

    1. Hearing all the music was one of the great parts about the trip. We came home with lots of CDs of traditional Irish music and CDs of some of the musicians we saw. Thanks.

  2. Once again you have captured that unique spirit of an Irish pub with these two musicians. That looks like some kind of bagpipe on the left. I've never seen or heard of Irish bagpipes, only Scottish and Northumberland. Did you hear/see the Bodhran I think it's called, trad Irish drum. I see there are videos on You Tube About it.
It's great that you took to Ireland so well. If you like watching DVDs then Widow's Peak gives a lovely feel to Small Irish town, very funny and tio Stars Joan Plowright, Mia Farrow and Natasha Richardson -better known over perhaps. That should be 'top' Stars. Hope you don't mind me suggesting.

    1. Thanks Jez! My husband who is 1/2 Irish doesn't like bagpipe music, so when these two musicians started playing he wanted to leave...but after a few minutes it was OK because the sound wasn't as strong as regular bagpipes. I will have to look for the trad Irish drum and see if it is similar to the ones we saw some of the musicians playing. A lot of the instruments were different from what we were used to.

I will have to look for the DVD you suggested, especially since I like all those actresses. Thanks for mentioning it.

    2. Jez, I looked at the YouTube video and that is the same drum I saw when we saw some of the trad musicians. I think I have a sketch of someone playing it, and will have to do another version for here.

    1. Thanks. The new theme is music and musicians, but that can be interpreted in a lot of ways...and I'm sure people here would enjoy different ways of responding to that theme.

  6. Thank you Joan! I just got back from a week away (family trip/visit) so happy to have the added help as I slept in this morning! Just getting around to seeing the blog and making the necessary changes to the side bar. I've added the long letter I send to new contributors as a reminder to all how we work things here. Hope it helps everyone keep names and theme in their title boxes and label sections.
    Again, thanks.

And your art is perfect...ly wonderful!

    1. Thanks so much Lynn!

When I got on the computer this morning I figured you were still away and maybe I should remind everyone about the new theme. I know you usually remind us of the next theme a few days ahead. I did collect a few of my photos of musicians and sketches of musicians so I would have reference for some new sketches.
