Daily Life, school, by Elaine (jaguarish)

This is the school my kids attend, and I drive them to and from school every day (because in Australia, there are no school buses, and I don't think my kids are old enough to go on public buses by themselves).  I have started dropping my kids off in a quiet street near the back of the school, rather than brave the crazy scene at the front of the school.  I think as the school grows it is getting crazier and crazier!  So I had time to relax and make a sketch of the school.  I only pencilled in some shapes lightly and had to wait until much later in the day to add the watercolour but it seems to be recognisable anyway -- some of my daughter's friends recognised it as they watched me paint it.  I was trying to use deep blue for the shadows but I think maybe this time it didn't work...

  1. Great way to use your time waiting for the kids. Love your painting.

  2. This is lovely and so well done, it's such a complex sketch but everything looks in proportion and places just perfectly. The colours are great and I think the blue shadows work well.

  3. This is a wonderful scene. I like your shapes and how they flow and interact with one another. In other words I agree with Jez (I just glanced up and saw that she'd expressed what I thought much better than I had :) )

  6. Nice sketch of the school! I think it gets crazy near all schools with the lineup of parents in cars, and buses, and kids walking. I try to avoid driving near the schools anywhere near release time.

  8. Very lovely watercolor! I think the sky carries the picture. I love that the kids recognized and appreciated it!

  9. Thanks for all the supportive comments everyone, makes me feel special. :) My concern with the blue is that the colour is coming forward rather than receding as shadows are supposed to do. I need to think more about the right way to colour such a scene! Any suggestions?

  10. I am by no means an expert or even a novice at this, but maybe if the other shades in the picture were darker, the blue would recede?
