Daily Life, looking up in the city, by Elaine (jaguarish)

I was lucky to have two art events this weekend.  My husband bravely released me to go to both of them!

Below is a page from my journal, about Sunday's outing.  For a big day out I sometimes enjoy making a series of small drawings.  It was an Urban Sketchers meet, for sketching some gargoyles and cats carved in stone on a few old buildings in George Street, Brisbane.  I took the bus into town with my daughter so the first sketch was done during the bus ride, based on her suggestion of what to sketch.

The second sketch site was The Mansions, built 1889, which features a cat statue at each end of the roof, carved from New Zealand stone.  The third site was the old government printing office which has 2 big devilish gargoyles on top, a devilish face over the main doorway and 4 tiny gargoyle heads atop the 4 columns in the facade.  The devils are a reference to "printer's devils" -- more about this for the curious on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Printer's_devil

The "proper" sketches from the day are here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=oa.638127916265173&type=1

  1. It's interesting what you could glean from the bumpy bus ride! Quite impressive and informative. Thanks for sharing the link too!

  4. I love how you captured the day in small sketches, each so lovely! Elaine, you had a full day of sketching. Glad to see that we have some members here who are also Urban Sketchers. I find it sketching with our group takes me to places I probably wouldn't have gone on my own.
