Animals, Pelicans by Joan Tavolott

I was gone all day today so I am going to reach back into my bag of sketches for an animal to post today. This was done last year when I was down in Myrtle Beach, SC. Not too far away from our resort was Murell's Inlet where there were many pelicans.

  1. Last summer we had a large flock of pelicans come through our area. We don't usually have them here, so it was pretty exciting to see these big birds. I love these soft monochromatic paintings!

  5. I love the glowing sanguine colour of your painting, and the life sketches of the pelicans. The pelican is a bird I have always wanted to see since childhood. My father often used to say the couplet about them "A wonderful bird is a pelican, his beak can hold more than his bellican". It sounded such a weird bird, but I've never achieved my ambition yet, except on TV.

  6. These are beautiful. I love the tone of the paper and the ink, too.

  7. Oh they are beautifully done Joan.

My family love vacation at Myrtle beach. They are Canadians as I am so most of us are the snowbirds who come over white faced and skinned and get burned to a crisp. You spot us in ten seconds. Ha-ha.

  8. You have done a fine job of a monochromatic sepia tone painting. This would be an excellent start to use before doing acrylics or oils. It gives you all the darks and lights so the final painting would be easier to complete. Of course, it is beautiful as is, but I always look for ways to improve my art in all mediums. Lovely Pelicans.

  9. Thanks everyone. I really like pelicans. One of my favorite books when I was a kid was called "Pellican Prill" but I no longer remember the author. I always get excited when I go somewhere and they are lounging around.
