Time Away From Home, Haleakala Crater, by Joan Tavolott

Back in 1988 my good friend was planning a vacation to Hawaii with her mother. They invited me along. This was my first and only trip to Hawaii. We stayed on Maui but also went to Oahu and the Island of Hawaii. We decided to take a tour of the Haleakala Crater on Maui, and they do it at sunrise. The tour company had us meet them in front of the hotel at 4am and told us to bring our blankets off the beds because it would be very cold up there while we waited for sunrise...they were right!
It was cold but beautiful as the sun slowly rose above the edge of Haleakala which is a dormant volcano and is 10,023 feet above sea level. This was done from one of my photos.

  1. Joan, such a wonderful sunrise! It must have been real impressive. In your painting I dan see and feel the explosion of colors.

  2. The word that came to my mind was explosion. The sky around that sunburst is lovely, the way your hues change and fade towards the top of the painting. What a wonderful sight it must have been.

  4. Thanks everyone. The orange color came out a bit bit brighter than it looks in my sketch, but it was a really pretty sight.

  5. How neat, and how beautiful! It looks like a sun- or starburst!

  6. That must have been so beautiful to see, and well worth the early pre-morning wake up time to get there. We got up that early to see a buffalo round up in South Dakota a year or so ago. Maybe I can draw that? Pretty colors and exciting movement in your sunset.

  7. I have spent time on Maui and loved it. But we did not go to the volcanoes. This is a great depiction of sunrise.

  8. What a sight to have seen. Love your splash of colour. I'm really pleased you added the Location Joan, when I dragged the little pegman over to the red marker on the map, it took me to the crater - wonderful to see it. Here's hoping more contributors will add the Location in their posts too.
