Time Away From Home, "Buffalo Round Up in South Dakota", Lynn Cohen

One of my most memorable vacations recently, September 2012 we drove from California across country to South Dakota to see many sights along the way, but to specifically be in South Dakota for the annual buffalo round up. We got up at 4 a.m. to drive in the dark, through Custer State Park, watching the sun rise in brilliant colors arriving at a site in the park where we sat and waited for hours until we finally saw cowboys on horseback herding over 1000 buffalo from throughout the park into a huge pen where they would be inoculated, checked out and then some would be auctioned off, some returned to the wilderness of the park for another year. Seeing these huge animals running across the prairies of the park was a magnificent sight to behold, simply breathtakingly beautiful. I drew this from one of my many photos from that trip.

I used dip pens in Noodles Golden Brown and Black ink. I am new to these Speedball nib pens and can see they will take some practice and time getting used to. I used a bit of pink Micron pen on his tongue which is licking inside his nose! And some Copic multiliner black ink.

  1. Lynn, this is great. Using dip pens is something I have thought about...so glad you have given them a go.

    1. Thanks Ann. It's my first trial with them. I used two colors of ink. And two different sized nibs that are calligraphy nibs.

  2. Don't you just love using new toys! I know I do. Your texture on the fur is great. I knew right off it was a buffalo, and it's kinda abstract. A new style for you?

  9. Lynn, what a enormous scene you tell of and paint of! This buffalo licking his nose is so livid, I like the tongue, the colour of it, the whole head is so living. As a kid, a teenager I read a lots of Zane Grey -books of cowboys, indians and buffalos riding on the big prairies....

  10. Sounds a wonderful memory, and the noise must have been tremendous. It is good to use different painting tools now and then because they make us work in a different way. This is so interesting, and quite different from your different style, and it is lovely. You have so much texture and solidity, and the feeling of the rough hair of the animal.

  11. My great grandpa Benjamin was Custer's only caucasian scout, and would have seen the vast herds a he was on the plains, first scouting for wagon trains, then hired by Custer, and later ranching in S Dakota!
This is a Lôvélÿ piece, and great memory. My mom used a dip Pen when writing letters in the 50s and 60s, and occasionally I would as well.
I've had a few myself, before the ink cartridges took over...
