Human Beings And How They Spend Their Time, Sketching by Joan Tavolott

On Tuesdays I either paint with my plein air group, or if the weather isn't nice (like today) or it is winter, I join the South Bay Art Association's Sketch Group for the morning. We have a model pose and most of us do a portrait. Everyone works in the medium of their choice. I had finished my portrait of the model and decided to do a quick sketch of her and some of the members sketching or painting her. I sketched it before the group broke up but added the color when I got home. I did this in my Stillman & Birn Beta sketchbook and it extended a bit onto the other side of the page.

  1. I really like how you did the gentlemen at back and made him so prominent. I don't think I have ever seen that from an artist. Excellent Joan..

  2. Love your actives that keep you drawing. Such great opportunities. And I'm also enjoying how well you drew and painted this group. I agree with Carol, the fellow in the folding chair ... Brilliant! I can also "feel" the energy from the white haired woman!

  5. Thanks Carol Ann, Lynn, Elisa and Ann. I usually finish my portrait before everyone else and feel I should stop before I mess it up. LOL I had about 20 minutes before the session was over, and like many of you I decided to make the most of the time.

  7. A sketch group would be so much fun! I'd have to get over my fear of drawing in front of other people, I guess. I'm working on that, but I try to be very inconspicuous. I love this sketch, especially the guy in plaid.
