Garden's & Parks, "Hollyhocks" by Lynn Cohen

I just sat and drew these from a photo taken in our garden in the back yard. I once had over fifty blooming hollyhock plants like this blooming at one time. Now I am lucky if I find five a year. But they do keep reseeding themselves and are tall wonders to look at and enjoy in all shades of pinks, burgundy and whites.

Tomorrow morning I will hopefully have time to paint them. If not they will be brought to life at another time. In the meantime hopefully you will enjoy the ink version! I enjoyed drawing them.

My trusty Faber-Castell PITT artist pen black SX did the deed!

  1. Lovely sketch. I always like a sketch without colour in its own right, and when it comes to adding colour I often photocopy the drawing to keep that version too.
I often tried to grow hollyhocks because they are stunning plants, but they just did not like our soil, lovely though our black soil is. I hope you show the completed version soon.

    1. I have a theory that hollyhocks do best in the worst conditions! I once saw a thriving bunch of them at the side of a deserted parking lot :)

    2. Well, Jez, that's exactly what I do too! Maybe one day I'll offer a coloring book of my drawings! And Margaret, I guess these particular flowers like our hard clay earth that must seal their roots and hardy tall stalks for life! As mine have been returning every year for 26 years now!

  2. I love hollyhocks and I love this drawing of them. You've paid such loving attention to each individual flower and its personality.

    1. Margaret, I love how closely you observe a drawing before making your comments. It's so obvious as you SEE exactly what I did!

  4. The first thing I thought was that it looked like a wonderful coloring book illustration. I think that is a great idea, Lynn.

  5. Oh, I looked at your colored drawing first. They are both very good but my fave is this ink drawing. (And I thought you were some wonder gardener to get your hollyhocks to bloom so early.)
