Gardens & Parks, "Greening Up", by Rob Kulas

It is still snowy here where I live but I needed some green in my life to help me over this last bit of winter.
This is some weedy vegetation at the edge of our field that ends in our yard. I tried  to see how many different greens I could paint in this and still make it true to nature.
Sometimes just the shapes and colors of these weeds seems beautiful to me.
Just painting this has invigorated me and makes me anxious for warm weather.
About 5x7 in a Moleskine Sketchbook. Watercolor and white gouache.

  1. So glad you found a bit of green to cheer you up amongst the white of winter there, Rob. What a beautiful job you did of mixing colors to bring this "weed patch" to life! I really don't know why "weeds" get such a bad rap really! I have some beauties that pop up in my garden that grow taller than anything else topped with wonderful purple flower tops. I welcome them to my garden. I'll draw them when they arrive this year to share with you and your weeds!

  4. The early spring weeds are indeed a welcome bit of green, until they invade one's budding garden. Nice painting.

  5. Rob, you did a great job on the variety of the greens and the negative painting around the leaves. I agree that often the "weeds" look great...sometimes even better than what is planted. Like here there seems to be bits of green around you, but the browns and rusts of the winter are still too plentiful for my taste. lol

  7. It's amazing what a little green can do for us, isn't it? Weeds can be interesting and even beautiful. These are.

  8. Great depth and nice shadows - love the spatters too. I hope everyone clicked on it and looked at the details of the painting. I like the use of gouache as well.

  11. So very lively and alive, and I love the way the lighter greens 'push forward'. Just greens, but you have made them so colourful.
