Camping holiday, by Elaine (jaguarish)

In Australia, as in the UK, vacations are called "holidays" -- here is a sketch of a neighbour at the adjacent site on a camping holiday.

Vacations & Holidays, Campanile, St. Mark's Square, Venice by Margaret Coote

The Campanile has a special place in my heart. It was here that an important moment in my decision to pursue music as a career took place.

I was 19, on an orchestra tour to Venice with the orchestra of the University of Tübingen, Germany, where I was spending the year studying German language and literature. I'd climbed this tower with 2 of the musicians from my group, and one of them, the soloist traveling with us, was telling us how he'd decided to give himself a year to just practice…he was describing getting up each morning, making himself coffee, opening his window, and starting his scales…

and my heart just soared, and yearned to have this experience too. I remember looking down at the square, and knowing that I had to find a way to get myself to that place in my life, somehow. It took many more years, but I finally did.

I used a non-copyrighted photo as a reference for this drawing.

Vacations & Holidays. Glider flying, Sirkka Jalava

One summer we spent some weeks at the airfield supporting our son, who learned glider flying! Guess what I was feeling! Yes I was proud of him of course, but also worried as every mother should have been but everything was ok and he got his license when he got the age, he filled 16 or 17 years a month later and had then the right age and the glider license. In the picture you can see the glider on the ground and an airplane flying above. it is the plane which towed the glider up in the air and then released the glider and went away for landing. The glider must clear the flight self and go down for landing self when it was that time.

Vacations & Holidays, The Archipelago, Sirkka Jalava

This challenge brings me to think on many variations of vacations. To day i remembered a vacation, when we in our painting group took a boat  to the Archipelago , settled down there in a guesthouse  and painted there around. on the rocks and enjoyed the water scenes.  One day we hired a little boat and went to an island more far away and painted there too.
The islands are formed of rocks, and naturally surrounded by the sea. In this case the Baltic Sea.
We had very fun during our days there in the middle of the sea. We painted, got our meals served. I have perhaps no art works left at home. These I have sketched very quickly of my photograps from there.
I used again my Fabriano sketcbook, size 8"1/4x11"3/4, not suitable for watercolors, the paper creases, unfortunately. ( I bought to day a new one, I hope it is a little better)

Vocations & Holidays, The shore, Sirkka Jalava

Earlier we lived in Sweden and on summertime we used to take a boat  and travel to Finland. We lived in the town Stockholm and when it was vocation-, holidaytime, it was nice to spend that on countryside. Especially for the kids it was an experience.  I have now sketched a beach, you can see the sea and forest reflections on the water, a boat floating and buoies floating on the water. Here the children could paddle with canoes with an instructeaur. And swim on the left side we dont see here.
Just close to the shore there is a service house, where you we could take a shower, bath in the sauna, get our food  and coffee. And sleep if we wanted.  Perfect!

Time Away From Home, Vacations & Holidays, Norway by Mia

Hello everyone!
I'm Mia and I live in Finland.
I started drawing the end of last year, after a long long break. In January I joined an art course called "starting Art course" and today was the last meeting. So, i'm very excited about this group, thank you very much for accepting me to join! I went through almost all the postings and I have to say that all of you have very good and inspiring works!

I love to do sketches and recently I have also enjoyed painting.

I'm looking forward to see more your inspiring works, challenge myself and see my own improving with you! :)

First I have to say sorry about the quality, my scanner should upgrade to the new one.
Anyway, we traveled to Norway in summer 2010 on motorcycle. It was amazing holiday!
I took a picture of beautiful little waterfall and today I made this quick sketch of it (challenging because landscapes and detailed things are very difficult to me. But actually it was very pleasurable to do!).

Vacations & Holidays, London, Sirkka Jalava

A quick sketch about a London trip. For a long time ago. Now when I see the picture, I remember, that it was very warm weather and we had water bottles with us all the time. We got tired because we walked so much and saw many places, for example Tower, here in the background, Madame Tussouds Cabinet,  The War Museum, a s o. Most of the time in London we spent at  Hendon airport, because of the old historical airplanes. And it was ok. The Tower Bridge is impressive too. London taxi impressed most on me! They were friendly, serviceminded, and they drove with speed. London is beautiful with its many old buildings, with parks, with the climat. It did not rain when we were there.

Vacations & Holidays "Waiting at the Airport" by Elisa Choi

I sketched my dad when we were waiting for our flight to Macau last March. He was busy playing games on his phone. During our trip to Macau I wasn't able to sketch on location as we were always on the go. This theme will be a good excuse to pull some of the photos and sketch them. Thank you Lynn for hosting this friendly blog. Thanks for the new theme Ann. Take care everyone! :)
