Summer Vacation, Camping Lantern, Penny StewArt

Summer Vacation, Camping Lantern
This is very like the old rusty Coleman light we had when we took the kids camping many years ago. I never really liked it when we were fighting mosquitos, bees, wind, sand, rain, collapsing tents and crying kids, but when I look back, I have some fond memories. Painting is 6x6 on heavy paper, done in acrylic, using heavy gessoed base, for lots of texture.

I don't do vacations any more, because I am retired in sunny Southern California, and every day is a holiday! But back in the day, I remember our camping trailer, the coleman cooler, and working harder than I ever would have at home to make meals, keep the kiddies clean and not loose them in the woods or drown them in the lake. Still, we called it fun and "getting away." I was always gladder to get back home to my own bed and frig! Watercolor, 9x12 sold.

  1. Your old lantern is so full of color. I just love seeing it hanging there from the tree...but that watercolor camper....it is the cutest ever. It reminds me of the old small Airstreams. And to see the two children standing there in front...that is a precious scene. No wonder it is already sold. Boy, can I relate to the story you told about getting ready for the camping trip and then watching the kids while there. That sounds like my story...probably the story of most moms that go camping. A great duo of pictures. genie

  2. As always your paintings are lovely Penny, and in fact they have brought back memories of our family holidays with our kids too.

  3. Beautiful pieces on the going away theme. I really like the lantern and how well the glass looks like glass. Great thee for this time of year. Hugs-Erika

  4. Love your paintings, Penny, but HATE camping! Although in an RV as we traveled this country for 2 years, I was more comfortable than in my parents' tent in childhood, I NOW NEVER WANT TO SET FOOT IN ANY SORT OF CAMPING SHELTER AGAIN!

    1. Thanks, Joan! More fun than the actual camping experience, I think.
