"Resting Henry", Animals, Lynn Cohen

I loved this assignment from Roz Stendhal in Sketchbook Skool. I had to draw a sleeping cat.
Well, that's because it's easier to draw a sleeping cat than a constantly on the move cat. Because our cat, Henry V, sleeps most mornings away in our garage, I quietly stole out to the garage to find his hiding place. It was dark so I had to turn on the light. There he was curled up asleep on a black packing blanket. I stood with small 6" X 4" watercolor card pad in hand and a black Uni Ball Vision Elite pen and drew quickly. He looked up once and then went right back to sleep deciding that I wasn't up to much. I admit the face drawing is mostly made up as he only looked up for a mini second. But I like it's cartoonish quality just fine. It looks like we have three cats but really it is all Henry!

I came back in the house and used my Winsor & Newton Watercolors.
Tommy Kane turned me on to the Uni Ball pen, available in most grocery stores. It flows black ink
is the smoothest of lines on 140# watercolor paper!

Enjoy a creative day!

    1. Doesn't he JacquiP? Cats do know how to relax. Glad I could capture that!

  3. Cats are nice but I am not a lover of cats but you have hit all sketches right on. Very skilled approaches.

  4. These are such GREAT images ~ LoVe them!
And I laughed as I read your cat's name: Henry V ... my very first cat, the result of a clever show-n-tell in 1st grade, was given the name King Louie XIV. Where I pulled that name from I'll never know!

    Merry creating!

    1. Thanks Rose. Henry V got his name as he is the fifth cat my husband and I have been owned by together. Nice to know he has regal friends in the woods! ;-)

  5. He looks like he's guarding your art supplies from Dick Blick. :) I love the uniball pens. I have them in blue and black and use them for all my writing as well as some sketching. The blue is not as water resistant as the black, though.

    1. Wasn't that funny? I didn't notice till I was almost done that the box over his head was from my sketchbook order from Dick Blicks! I loved that arty touch too. Thanks for the tip about the blue Uni Ball not being as water resistant than the black. Tommy Kane draws with both in the same picture and it's incredible. The two colors go together well.

  6. I love these drawings and your stories that accompany them. I can just picture him rolled up there, looking up and then going back to sleep. This makes for a really interesting composition, too, the three views rolled into one!

  7. Lovely sketches of Henry, he even looks sleep when he has lifted his head. I do like the double drawing in the second one, it gives the feeling of him looking up unexpectedly.
