Daily Life, Commuting on the Train by Joan Tavolott

Today I went into Manhattan to join the NYC Urban Sketchers for the day.
I made use of the commute by sketching some of the other commuters.
This sketch was done on the Long Island Railroad from Ronkonkoma to NYC.

These were quick pencil sketches I did on the A train (subway) going from Penn Station up to 181st Street in Washington Heights.

I think if I had to commute every day I would be napping like the lady on the right. lol

  1. I like your pencil sketches. Trains are great places for sketching people without them noticing. If its not too bumpy. Looks like you have nice comfy seats on your trains.

    1. Thanks. It is funny but the NYC subway is a smoother ride than the Long Island Railroad....also you face the people so it is easier to sketch them.

  2. How fun. Your sketches are great and yes the lady seems to be relaxing with the hum of the train. I would too.:)

  4. I bet you would be sketching, not napping. :) I especially love the pencil sketches. Lovely lines!

    1. Thanks. When I used to commute to work in the city (YEARS ago) I was usually standing in a crowded subway car and you could barely move. lol

  5. I like your sketches of the commuters! The first one is very good! I used to commute too but could never fall asleep, like this lady. :)

    1. Thanks. I have to be comfortable to fall asleep, so I probably wouldn't fall asleep either.

  6. Lovely sketches, I like both different styles. Trips like yours are like being in waiting rooms - you have to be there, so it might as well be sketching time. Unless, of course, you are standing squashed like sardines on a peak time commuter train. I'll pop to see your paintings of the day on your blog.

    1. Jez, thanks so much for your comment and visiting my blog. Sketching makes time pass so much faster in waiting rooms and on trips. It was funny...I was so busy sketching on the subway that I didn't notice one of urban sketching friends was at the end of the same subway car that I was riding in, but at the far end. He was probably sketching too since the ride took more than a half hour.

  7. Such a wonderful job of drawing her and all her belongings! I can feel as though I am sitting next to you both there! And the faces are well done too. Lots of personality showing through! Love the colors of the top one!

    1. Thanks! I keep trying to find a seat on the Long Island Railroad that has a really good view of the other riders, but mostly the people are blocked by the high backed seats.

  8. Joan your sketching too amazes me. How you can sit and doddle away and it looks so real after. Your first one is really colorful . I like.

    1. Thank you! I sketched in pencil first since the train ride isn't too smooth. I'm always surprised that it doesn't come out like a big mess. lol
