I was 19, on an orchestra tour to Venice with the orchestra of the University of Tübingen, Germany, where I was spending the year studying German language and literature. I'd climbed this tower with 2 of the musicians from my group, and one of them, the soloist traveling with us, was telling us how he'd decided to give himself a year to just practice…he was describing getting up each morning, making himself coffee, opening his window, and starting his scales…
and my heart just soared, and yearned to have this experience too. I remember looking down at the square, and knowing that I had to find a way to get myself to that place in my life, somehow. It took many more years, but I finally did.

DeleteCongratulations on your determination and decision. What instrument do you play? It is good to be able to follow a career path you have chosen yourself. I like the mistiness of your sketch, as if it is representing the uncertainty of that moment before you made your decision.
ReplyDeleteThanks Jez. Yes, everything was very uncertain at that time. I play viola, and violin, and I do some singing too. I'd had some very bad experiences in high school, so I needed to choose it on my own terms. It's been quite a road!
