"My First Trip to Mexico", Time Away From Home, Vacation & Holidays, Lynn Cohen

When I was a teenager, I used to lay on my bed staring out the window day dreaming of places I wanted to travel to. The first trip I took by myself  (I started out with a woman I met through a newspaper ad, but she turned out to be bad news so I went on by myself) at age 19 was to Mexico.

I had such fantastic good luck with the people I met along the way. Everyone was kind and helpful.
In one town I met a young woman who worked at the bank and later we found ourselves on a bus to Mexico City together. She was going to visit her aunt and uncle. I had the address of a youth hostel. When we arrived it was dark out, raining, I asked if her uncle could direct me to the youth hostel. The aunt and uncle said it was late, so I should come to their home for the night and they'd take me there the next day. Well, they talked it over and invited me to stay with them instead. I stayed two weeks. They took me everywhere to see the sites. This is an Inca Pyramid we climbed up!

I do not have photos from that trip of long ago. (fifty four years ago) So I went on line and Googled Non-copyright photos of Mexico and found this picture. I drew it and painted it.

Oh the wonderful memories I have of my travels.

  1. How kind of those people to help you, it must have made your trip so much more worthwhile. Love your painting of this Inca Pyramid, what a fabulous thing to have climbed :-)

    1. Ann, it made the trip so much fun. The mom did not speak English but she took me out by bus to tour the City and all I could say was "Muy Bonita" Very beautiful at every church she took me to and by. She and I also played poker together. She had four children, three at home. And they turned off the water at the apartment in the evening.

  2. Interesting painting, I like the balance you have created. The good thing about this theme is reading other people's memories as well as the artwork. Great memories here, and I agree about the wonderful kindness of some strangers we meet. Enjoyed this and thinking of that brave 19 year old.

    1. Thanks Jez. I must give credit to the photographer of this one as it was not me, for the balance in the picture. Yes, I had fun then and continue to do so now.

  4. Great sketch of the pyramid and the detail to the left. Great story and memories of such nice, kind people that you encountered. You were adventurous to travel by yourself at such a young age. I always had my sister to travel with when I was that age...sometimes that created problems too since she didn't hesitate to do anything. lol

    1. Joan, it's nice you could travel with your sister. Her bravery must have gotten you into lots of stuff you had to make big decisions about. ;-) Glad you like the detail of the drawing.

  6. I truly enjoyed your story. You were very brave to travel alone. Those people were very kind to let you stay with them and of course it made things safer. Your painting is awesome. Love the detail and the blue sky overlooking the world.

    1. You know Gloria, I have always looked very young for my age, so at 18 I think I looked 12. Therefore, people saw this young kid traveling alone and just made darn sure I would be safe. It happened over and over again. Glad you like my painting too.

  8. Let's see, I can add . . . You are the same age as me, Lynn! But much braver, I can see that. I have never traveled by myself. It must be exhilarating to feel that confident and free. I look forward to more of your travel memories.

    1. Penny, I was sure I was the eldest here! Nice to have a sister in arms. I think I did those early travels mostly "out of body" as I do not feel all that brave. Or perhaps I was just very naïve. I'm glad I did it though, and I some how think even if I did it again today I'd always meet people along the way who would be helpful. I am good at talking to strangers. Maybe my folks forgot to tell me not to do that. ;-)
