Humans and their Activities/Art Supplies, Paintbox, Jez Eden

Pitt Pen and Watercolour - Jez
A4 Sketchbook
I'm a coward!  I've been admiring all the paintings of watercolour boxes, and wanting to make a sketch for the Art Supplies half of this theme, but I felt I'd never be able to do my paintbox reasonably well.  At last I decided I had to go for it before the week was over, and guess what - I could do it, well enough at least to feel I could show it to you.  Pity I painted the bottom row of colours in the wrong places!  I don't know if anybody else ever has these moments of self-doubt, which come along every now and then even in old age.

I've learnt so much on PPP&P.  I am pleased that I am now managing to use a looser style to add to my different art skills, without feeling it should all be 'tidy'.  I've learnt from Lynn to add more writing to my sketch, which helps to make it almost self-explanatory, and feel it has made a difference.  Thank you Lynn.  (I hope I'm right in thinking 'learning from' is not plain 'copying'!)

So here are my two paintboxes, plus the chart I made when I bought the larger box years ago.  When a colour is almost used up I fill the pan from one of my tube colours.

  1. Great to see such a colourful page Jez. It doesn't matter if you put colours in the wrong places and it's good to do the writing too.

  3. Jez, it makes a great arrangement, the way you painted all these things and added the writing! It's lovely. Yep, I know self-doubt! But I think it always lies, so it's always best to ignore & barrel on! I'm so glad you did/do! :)

    1. Thanks Margaret, I'm glad I'm not alone. And in future I shall say to that self-doubting mind 'Go away, you always lie!', so you may make things easier when that happens in future.

  4. The art supplies is very delightful you did and writings as well. I would find that tricky too for me to do. So I also have procrastinated.

The eraser overly using I had mentioned I was talking of in my entry of Highness on the throne. My Love is In the Air yes I was not

using the eraser. Thank you kindly for your encouragement. Your art pieces are an encouragement for me. Thank you.

  5. Oh Jez, I so love your sense of homour! You are a delight! Your paint box is too. And that you have made it a lovely journal page is awesome. To think that I have inspired you to do so is doubly awesome. The whole Sketchbook Skool I am involved in on line right now is all about making Art Journals. I am not the Queen of them in any sense of the word. They are used and created by many before ME. So no, you are not "copying". You are choosing to turn your wonderful detailed drawing into an art journal page! And I LOVE IT!

    1. PS thanks for suggesting the idea of adding tube paint to the emptied pans as they occur. My green is running low. I could very well do that instead of running out to replace the pan of green paint. Thanks again.

  6. Jez, both of your paint boxes came out great!!! Looks like you have the small W&N travel set. I have one of those and lost the water cup a long time ago. lol I like that you have a color chart for the larger one. I have mine marked with the color names (and still often fill it with the wrong color) but don't have a chart. That's smart!

  7. I love the juxtaposition of black and white and the vibrant colors! I read a book called "Steal Like an Artist" by Austin Kleon. As he says, there's nothing new under the sun, so even if we feel like we're copying others, it's really all been done before. We're just recombining old ideas when we create. All that to say, don't feel guilty about learning from others. None of us has a copyright on a particular style. LOVE this painting!
