Away from home, Göttingen, Sirkka Jalava

Once upon a time begins the story and continues, it was time to travel to Germany to practice the language for my graduating. I had studied the German language some years. So I decided to take a job in Germany for the summer as we students used to do at that time. I had been before in Sweden in many summers, jobbed and earned money and learned the language. After changing some letters with  German employers I could start the journey to Germany. In fact, I did it in two summers. At that time I had sketchbook with me, sometimes I did draw and paint there.
These sketches I painted from the window of my room in Göttingen.
This is the St Johannis Church. I climbed up at least once with some friends to the tower in left side.

From my roof window I could see even this church, called St Jacobi.
And another painting of St Jacobi
I became friends with some girls:
I sketched Mirja
and Hilu
and
Karin, a german girl.
Eeva I sketched when I was back at home again.
I hope to find some sketches from my Sweden-summers too! (It would be fun to me, for you too?)

  1. They say the only way to learn a language is to live within it. I hope you achieved all you wanted during your education Sirkka. Lovely to see your drawings :-)

  2. Ann, that is true. With studies you get the theory but to use the language you must live with it. I achieved the most I wanted, only no education within the art, except a little art history. Thank you!

    1. Thank you Joan! It was really learning in many ways. The grade in a language presumed a visit in land, but we must organize everything self. Painting I have allways been interested in.

  7. Your paintings are so beautiful, the shapes and soft volours make it look a perfect place to stay and learn the language. Your sketches are also very good, and it is always nice to look back at such sketches and remember the people.

    1. Margaret. I did not have an idea that I´ll show them sometimes in a blogs sites! This is very old town with lots of houses crowding around the center. An Universitäts town. Near the former border between east and west Germany, in western Germany. I am glad, that you like them, my memories from the past.

    2. I haven't been to Göttingen but it reminds a little bit from your description of Tübingen, where I lived for a year. And yes, I'd love to see and hear about more!

    5. Margaret. I am so impressed of that you are a musician, I admire it. Living in other countries as you are young gives you lots of new points of views to living and it gives good memories. You lived there two years then? I can understand that you felt happy there. I was an other summer too, that time in Fulda,

  9. Yes, it is quite fun to relive this summer in Germany with you, Sirkka. I love it that so many Europeans speak multiple languages. That is so impressive. Your art from then is as wonderful as your current day art. You've been talented for a very long time.

    1. Lynn, we are so many and small countries here, so we must learn each other`s languages for the communication. Now it is mainly English all learn and speach and it makes all easier. According to art, I have allways been interesting in and also practising art, but it became not my thing for the life. Now I want to go further with art as far as possible. Perhaps I have learned some technic under the years. I am so glad to have this group, which is so activ and helps to work with different themes. So thank you, Lynn, for hosting it, for giving us an opportunity to be "artsy" and engouricing everyone here!

    2. Sirkka, thank YOU for being such an active participant on this blog. (and the same to all the other artists on our contributors list) It is fun for me to "run it" with Ann's help. She is more in the background now, but still quite helpful. We love that we've generated so many friendly artists here, who not only share their wonderful art, but their inspiration, encouragement and friendship.
