Art supplies, watercolour sets, by Elaine (jaguarish) and Anya

The "Art Supplies" theme is heaps of fun -- thanks for suggesting it Elisa!

I told Anya (my daughter, aged 8) that I was planning to sketch my watercolour supplies today, and she liked the idea and did a sketch of hers, too.  Anya is really maturing as an artist and I love her style!  Here's Anya's sketch, done in her A6 visual art diary:

And here's mine, done in my A5 visual art diary:

In case you are curious, this is a Mont Marte set of three palettes and a clear lid which cleverly twist together in a stack.  I love the design of it, but the colours themselves are a bit chalky.  I guess if I ever finish off these colours I will refill the case using tube paint.  Inside my pencil case I keep my Derwent watercolour and Inktense pencils, plus a few other helpful items like pencils, sharpener (the pink item at right), waterbrush (shown at front in this sketch), eraser pen and some scraps of paper with sample spots of the watercolours painted on.

  1. It's lovely to see your daughter's painting here Elaine, she is one talented young artist. I love the sound of your Mont Marte set, in fact any chalky appearance is good, I like this too.

  2. Anya's painting is excellent - it really doesn't look like a young child's work. She is very talented and has a great future as an artist. Give her my congratulations on her great piece of art.
I love yours with all the colours, and the arrangement you have made. I have a few brush pens, and have a week ago bought one that looks like the one in your painting which I haven't tried yet. They are so useful, aren't they.

  3. Elaine, It looks like Anya is very talented and I love how she sketched her palette open and closed. Your supplies look great. I love to see people using water brushes. It is funny that when I use mine there are so many people who have never seen one. I love them. I have seen those round palettes that screw together and was wondering what the colors were like. I would probably do the same thing and refill it. Great job on this.

  5. Charming mother-daughter duo of artists you are! Anya, Bravo, your art rocks! Elaine, the detail of your piece is quite wonderful. I've seen those little round stacks of paints at a nearby art store. Is chalking not a good thing? They look like ideal for travel perhaps? Thanks for sharing all of this.

    1. Thanks so much Lynn -- re the stacking paints, the design is certainly great for travel, but I don't like the quality of the paint in it. Re "chalky" paint: the paint doesn't glide on smoothly and the colour is not as saturated as in higher quality paint, and is literally chalky looking -- as if I have a mixture of powder and water. I also have a Mont Marte "professional" set (which no doubt is still not as good as some premium brands) and even with my limited experience I do prefer its richer fuller colours.
