"Fig Tree Gets A Head Cut", Garden's & Parks, Lynn Cohen

This morning I went outside in back wondering what I would draw. What hadn't I drawn already?
When I saw that our fig tree had been cut back! I had called the tree guy to do this, even told him he could just come into our yard anytime and do it; so I guess he did as I hadn't heard back from him.
I guess the bill will be in the mail for our predetermined price for this job. This tree grows like crazy and had gotten so tall I had great difficulty reaching any figs to pick and the birds got the most of them. I was so happy to find it much shorter now. For a while anyway. The figs are a delicious summer treat. I have a hard time not just eating them off the tree like candy!

I drew it in ink first as you can see, then added watercolors. (Prismacolor black ink 03 and Winsor & Newton watercolors).

Some of you may have noticed that I have been playing around with the design of the blog; Color changes mostly, as I am trying to see what background colors make our art pop the best!

Dark backgrounds seems to be the best. I felt it was getting lost in the white background of before, but I don't want to go to pitch black.

I hoped the green header lent itself to the garden and parks theme right now.

It might change again in the future.

  3. Mmm, this brings back memories of eating fresh figs from our tree covered in fresh cream from our cows. Heavenly! I didn't get the cream often, as my grandma used it to make butter, so it was a real treat. The pale bare trunks here look good against the fence and sky. I like the new blog look, too!

    1. Oh Melissa your fig and cream memories are mouth watering! I no longer partake of dairy, but unsweetened coconut milk (no dairy) might just do it for me! I'll let you know when they ripen! The figs themselves are sweet as sugar! I'm glad you like my painting; and the blog changes too!!

  4. Great sketch of the fig tree!! At first I thought you went to work with those pruning shears from the last sketch. lol I had never eaten a fig (except in Fig Newtons) until we visited friends in Texas. Their daughter thought it was strange that I had never tasted them, so she kept picking nice ripe ones for me while we were there.

I like the darker background...it works nicely!

    1. I dare say my shears would have broken in two had I tried this on the fig tree! She needed a big saw! I'm glad you've discovered the sweetness of fresh figs. And thanks for letting me know you like the darker background for our art!

  5. Oh you got the tree trimmed. good job. good job on the sketch and painting too. :) we love to stand in our neighbors yard with her and eat fresh figs off her tree .. One year Annie got a taste and saw us picking them and reached up and plucked on off and started eating it like we were.. Annie being our border collie for those that dont know Annie. I am having a bit of a very hard time reading the comments in the light gray box on this. Your comments.. the words blend in to much. So I don't like that.

    1. Cris, try making the box larger on your iPad, I bet you'll be able to read it fine then. Unless this is a vision problem of yours. It's clear to me if I enlarge it a bit! Fun Annie and the figs story!

    3. Yes, I adjusted it again, with black background, white letters and larger sized font. I hope everyone can read everything better now on the blog. Let me know if anything else is not working for you and I will do my best to adjust it if I can.

  6. Lynn, I love the colors in your painting of this fig tree! And I would love to come and eat the figs off the tree with you :) I like the new dark background of the blog, you're right about it making the art pop out. I went back and looked at some of the darker ones and felt like I was seeing them anew :)
