A late post on the buildings theme... sorry but somehow I did not manage to get to do one until today!  The planetarium is set in the beautiful surrounds of the Mt Coot-tha Botanical Gardens.  For these two sketches I had fun trying my fattest pen (Copic Ciao) with my biggest sketchbook (A3 size) to see what would happen.  I really enjoyed working in such a big format!  And because the paper is pretty low quality I didn't feel compelled to make a "precious" drawing but instead employed a very loose style.

This is the last of my sketches of buildings from my trip to Hoboken on Saturday.

After lunch a few of us walked down some of the side streets away from the water.

I loved the signs sticking out of the buildings and the canopies over some of the windows. I even got to sketch some cars which I still need a lot of practice doing.

When I was in Hoboken the other day I sketched this cafe. I love the awning, the colorful umbrella, and the fire escape...so typical of buildings in the city here.

Buildings Around the World, Ferry Terminal by Joan Tavolott

Today was the 44th Worldwide Sketchcrawl. I joined the NYC Urban Sketchers in Hoboken, NJ today. Hoboken is just across the river from Manhattan and has some really nice views of the city.

One of the sketches I did today was of part of the Hoboken Ferry Terminal.

For some strange reason I haven't been doing many buildings lately.

This was painted the other day at the Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay.

The arboretum is a former Gold Coast estate on 409 acres of land. The 65 room mansion, Coe Hall, had these wonderful arches along one side of the house.

On the last day of our recent trip away up north we stopped in Ferndale, CA, known for its old Victorian Houses or Pretty Ladies as I think they are called. We ate breakfast here at the Victorian Inn. I thought I'd have a hard time finding anything vegan on the menu, but when I saw the "choices of veggies to be added to an omelet" I ordered the veggies with out the eggs and cheese! It was yummy. I sketched this from a photo after we got home.

I'm pleased that the homework I am doing in Sketchbook Skool in semester 2, "Seeing" is applicable for posting here in our "Buildings Around the World" theme. This was an assignment to lay down a quick wash of watercolor then draw slowly over it, as I've done in the previous two houses I posted here. This one took close to three hours to complete. It's a huge mansion (green) in Eureka, California, where we were this past weekend for a nice relaxing visit. I drew it from the photo I took of it. Ann is in the same class. I hope she'll post some of what she's doing there as well.

My Painting of buildings

I learned several new techniques painting this one for a class I taught in Intermediate Acrylics at a local craft store.  The old buildings and telephone poles were a challenge.  But I did like the result.  Funny, no one in the class liked their own painting.  I think it was the style which was more like an oil painting.  We painted around the telephone poles, rather than painting them directly.  Everyone followed the same directions and used the same colors, but no two were alike.  I thought they did a great job, but the students were perfectionists!

Buildings around the World, Crazy House in Korea by Margaret Coote

I went on walks each morning up in the hills in Korea (Seoul). I found this crazy house with all these different shapes and textures, and it reminded me of something I might see in California. It looked like a creation dreamed up by Jules Verne. I love the cypresses (I think) that were in front of it, too. I painted this from a photo I took.

This building is in Wales and I couldn't resist sketching and painting it.  The sketch took me a couple of minutes, after that I added the watercolour.

I just watched a musical entertainment show called "The Capitol Fourth" on PBS.

I sketched through parts of it and sketched the US Capitol Building with the fireworks.

I love lighthouses and we have a few here on Long Island. This is Horton's Point Lighthouse located on the north shore.

This is my favorite of the Long Island Lighthouses and I go paint it quite often.

This one is the Fire Island Lighthouse.

This is Hook Head Lighthouse which I sketched in Wexford, Ireland.

Buildings Around the World, By the Water by Joan Tavolott

My sketch group goes out on Wednesday evenings to sketch a local scene. Tonight we sketched down  by the water along one of the canals in Sayville. Both buildings are part of the ferry terminals that provide service to the Fire Island communities. We sketched while a storm was heading to the area. We had some dark clouds which moved away, some thunder, and a bit of lightning off in the distance.

Plus a lot of mosquitoes tonight. lol

Here's a watercolour of the museum in our local town.  It was at one time the laundry for a massive Hotel (long gone now), but opened as a museum around 1932.
