I continued that tradition with my own daughterAn aceo mixed media painting of a scene from my childhood in Pennsylvania, US, in the 1940's and ;'50's . In our family, the Christmas Stocking was the King of Gifts - many different gifts from an orange (fresh fruit) and nuts in the shell to small dolls handmade by mother or grandmother to wrapped mystery gifts, games, socks, puzzles, etc. were stuffed into giant stockings (stockings big enuff to fit a real giant!). And every member of the family (including pets) had a stocking, with each member contributing to the stockings stuffing!
and even after she was grown, for my husband and pets.
Nice to hear about your Christmas gifts Donna and I love the drawing of the overflowing stocking.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun family tradition! Your drawing of all the gifts flowing out is adorable.
ReplyDeleteI DO REMEMBER DOING THE SAME THINGS WIH MY LARGE STOCKING. ESPECIALLY, THE ORANGES AND NUTS, AND SMALL DOLLS AND SMALL CARS FOR MY BROTHERS. THANKS FOR SHARING THIS, BROUGHT BACK MEMORIES.
ReplyDeleteI grew up in TN in the 50's & 60s and had the same experience! I love your drawing of the toys spilling out of the stocking, the little mantel mice watching, and the peek around the corner at the tree. Lovely memories.
ReplyDeleteThanks all - I'm glad my art evoked all the fond memories (got mine stirred up, too).
