Odd Characters, "Characters at Starbucks", by Lynn Cohen
I find odd characters to draw every time I go to Starbucks. I love how they sit and stare off into space, or at their iPhones, or at their laptops. Some actually interact with other human beings and talk to each other, some talk so loudly they can be heard for miles around. They are every ones local characters and I find them oh so much fun to draw and paint. Like I did these this morning with a Uni Ball Vision Elite pen and my Winsor & Newton travel paint kit.

As always you capture people so well. I love how you get so many on one page and they all balance out so well on the pages.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ann. I try to just go around the room and capture as many as will fit on the page, pretty much where they were too!
DeleteHi Lynn! Your sketches are wonderful! You have great lines! I also enjoy using the Uni-Ball Vision Elite, and I was wondering what kind of paper you used it in in these sketches? I really like using this pen as it feels very smooth and seems to glide. I use both the Bold and the Fine. For me, however, the ink is fairly soluble. The line doesn't disappear completely, but it washes out nicely, and once it dries it doesn't seem to lift if I go over it again. I've used it on Alpha and Epsilon Stillman and Birn, Strathmore Visual journals, Hand•Book Journals, Post-It notes, and checks... All with the same water soluble results... Even waiting for a day or two. I like the effect, but don't always want it. Your watercolors look clean in these sketches so it made me wonder...
ReplyDeleteWWendi I drew in my Pentalic, landscape, travelers art journal and now I am not sure which pen I used. I just looked in my bag to check and pulled out two Uniballs. One is a Vision Elete and the other is the Vision fine and the latter is waterproof. So I bet it was that one. I'll change my words up above. You have a very sharp eye and a lot of knowledge. I'm glad you are enjoying my sketches! BTW both pens seem to glide across the page for me.
DeletePS the paper is thin, but doesn't bleed, not even with dark markers! And only buckles a tiny bit, but I like that. Doesn't bother me. I think it makes the journal look cool.
DeleteI need to spend some time looking through here - love the sketches I've seen so far.
