"Five Steps of Henry Drawing", Animals, Lynn Cohen
I thought I'd post here what I did for Sketchbook Skool this week while we are drawing under the tutelage of Roz Stendhal. She suggests drawing one part of an animal at a time. This almost felt like drawing by numbers, any of you remember doing that as a child? It was very helpful in not becoming overwhelmed by the whole animal, but taking it one part at a time and completing that almost before moving on to the next and before I knew it I had the picture I wanted. A new way of going about things for me. I will do it again. I can't recommend these classes highly enough. I sure see my own progress since enrolling. In ways far beyond any expectations I may have had. It's a fun group of teachers and students and we all share and learn from each other.

I love your cat! Thank you for giving some tips on drawing!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Peggy! Thanks, and you are welcome!
DeleteThat is cool. Your cat is so alive looking.
ReplyDeleteI always draw my animals with the cross or the circles or curves for starters .plus the four lines. This is different must be neat to learn new things.
Feel it is much easier. Great tips. Much appreciated.
I seen a hairdresser color a girls hair one side first and wait them start on the other side like 20 minutes later. Different. Her hair after was even and great.
I never go to go to town as I am not feeling well with my Colits disease to have a five hour drive . So hubby went to his appointment alone to get reading back on his pre-cancer. . I feel bad as I usually go but he does not mine. I am losing weight too fast. I have made an appointment with Doctor for next week.
Thanks Carol Ann.
DeleteHenry looks wonderful! Sketchbook Skool sounds like fun. I need some mad money so I can take stuff like that when it comes up!
ReplyDeleteSave your pennies, Melisa, this group of teachers and classes are amazing and FUN!!!!!!!!!
DeleteWell done Lynn...I can see a change in your approach to your art already - through these classes I'm sure. Can I just say (no I'm not standing on my soap box) lol. ...but any classes, SBS included, are wonderful platforms to learn from. We don't realise at the time that our work, the way we look at art/a subject, has been affected, but little by little it has. I do the occasional Workshop here and although, at the time I feel I am not gaining, when I go away and start working on my own, I find I have learned something from the tutor. It is marvellous to gain extra knowledge and growing in confidence with what we create. [there....that's me said, lol ...off my soap box that apparently was there all the time, lol] ;)
ReplyDeleteLove you on your soap box Ann! I too have tried an occasional workshop now and again, but always felt I was drawing to my own drummer. These classes have loosened me up to realizing I can learn new tricks and apply them to my way of doing things too.
DeleteGlad I am letting new concepts in. It's fun too.
Henry looks great...nice job Lynn. I am sure that Roz's class is great and I know she is constantly drawing animals, especially at the zoo. It is fun to see your steps to complete this instead of just the finished piece.
ReplyDeleteThanks Joan. Yes, she is pushing me in ways that are making me grow what I can do in ways I never before imagined possible.
DeleteLynn, it is so great to see this step by step and see how you did it, and it is a wonderful drawing!
ReplyDeleteThank you Margaret. I really took my time with this one.
DeleteLynn, does one have to be a member of Facebook to do the Sketchbook Skool?
DeleteNo, one does not, however I find it such a rich community of artists sharing art, ideas, tips, encouragement, inspiration, I'd feel bereft without it!
Deleteyou are encouraging me…thank you!
DeleteThanks for sharing this, always great to see how others approach their drawing. Love the final version. I love cats :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Jacqui, It was a new approach for me. I like trying new things and my stint in Sketchbook Skool is giving me lots of new ideas.
DeleteLynn i applaud you for using pen and drawing this beautiful cat. i enjoy your step by step!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Elisa.
DeleteThank you for your step by step, it makes the drawing even more interesting. And it is a gorgeous drawing. I was taught a long time ago that the best way to start is with the eyes and work from there. I think it works because it requires careful observation. I have noticed with each post that your art is developing - I don't mean improving because it has always been expert, but moving forward in different ways, so your course is clearly well worth while.
ReplyDeleteAnd one of the things I love about PPP&P is that we can all learn from each other and pick up tips, so it's as good as a course as well.
Jez your tips and observations and words of praise all touch me deeply. I love that this blog is a forum on which we can all learn from each other. I do believe I am improving in my drawing skills. I think we all do each and every time we draw as we are continuing to practice and practice can only make us better over time. I agree the classes are worth their weight in gold for me.
DeleteGood to see, how you have drawn the cat head. Excellent work, Lynn!
ReplyDeleteThank you Sirkka! Means a lot.
