Today is Memorial Day here in the USA when we honor those who gave their lives in service to our country. There are parades and ceremonies in most of the towns. I decided to go into Sayville to sketch their service which was supposed to begin at 11:00 according to the internet...wrong!
The service in Sparrow Park was already over when I got there, but there was a ceremony taking place in front of the Sayville Fire Department honoring those who served and I caught the tail end of it.
I sketched two members of the color guard and the memorial wreath.
Then I went over to tiny Sparrow Park and sketched the memorial there.
Joan again I applaud you for such beautiful work of art and color.

Thank you, Carol Ann!
DeleteYou amaze me at how you search out what to draw, this perfect for Memorial Day. Colorful and somberly festive.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking all weekend about what to draw for Memorial Day that's why I checked the time for the service on the internet...it just shows the internet can be wrong too. Thanks, Lynn.
DeleteWonderful paintings Joan - love the colours you have used.
ReplyDeleteAnn, thank you. For holidays like this they always bring out the red, white, and blue.
DeleteVery lovely and touching sketches of the memorial sites. It is so important to remember those who were brave in so many ways.
ReplyDeleteJez, thanks. It is a somber thought when you realize how many lives have been lost in so many countries.
ReplyDeleteJoan, that is a great day to remember. You have sketched it so perfectly. Your Memorial Day is something like we have on our Independence Day in december the 6th.. That day we remember all who have given their life for the independence of the country. Very festive too, like in your beautiful picture.
