Time Away From Home, The Porch of the Maidens by Joan Tavolott

In 1971 and 1973 I backpacked through Europe with my sister, Fran and another friend. Like Lynn we relied on "Europe on $5 a Day" and it was possible to live well for that money. lol We went to Amsterdam, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Turkey, and London. The second trip also included a trip to Greece. In Athens we visited the Acropolis where we found the Porch of the Maidens. I only sketched part of it. There are actually six statues of maidens that stand like columns along the outside of the temple. We visited so many wonderful places. Maybe I will sketch another one.

    1. Thank you, Elisa. We will have to ask Lynn and Ann if we can do a Part II for Time Away From Home. I have too many locations to share in just 15 days. lol

  3. What adventurous you young people had, and freedom to roam. Just what I would have loved to do at that age, but not possible then. So it's good to read of travel adventures like these. Lovely sketch, showing the wear of age on the maidens - Caryatids, if I remember rightly.

    1. Jez, I was lucky at that age to have my sister, Fran who was a year older than me and my best friend. She had such a sense of adventure and easily talked me into doing things with her.
