Time Away From Home, old sketches, by Elaine (jaguarish)

I love this theme and have been thinking about it a lot!  But could not seem to commit to any solid ideas.  So I pulled out some old notebooks for inspiration.  I thought it would be fun to share here... hope you don't mind that these are so old (15-20 yr!)

I used to live in LA and go camping and hiking, and have many beautiful sketches of wilderness around the state...

I went to Japan in 1996 which was my first international trip ever.  I happened to be there during "Golden Week" when all of Japan has 4 days of holidays in the springtime and flowers are blooming everywhere.  I had a blast hanging out with all the westerners who were there to teach English (one of whom was the friend I was staying with).  I met my future husband there (an Aussie) who is the reason I now live in Australia.

I flew to Australia for good in 1997... And that was the end of my international travels! :)

  1. How interesting story of your life, Elaine! You made so superb sketches allready -69! ( In the fact I did too!) I am glad you shared them with us. And your visit in Japan was very important for your life! Now I am curious of your life in Australia, you have surely made trips in there you can tell for us about! It is not meaning that travels are international, but we tell about them too!

  2. Wonderful sketches - what I love about them is their 'immediacy', the feeling of them being drawn at that moment. And so interesting to read about too. I'm so glad you showed these, I enjoyed them so much.

  6. Thanks everyone for your kind comments. I am often surprised by what I find in old notebooks. I think I like my own work better when I have forgotten all about it and see it again as new. I loved Japan so much and it made such a vivid impression on me -- disappointed I did not make more sketches while there! I guess that means I should go back...

  7. Very exciting life adventures. Fun finding your old art and letting it take you down memory lane. Fun that we both met husbands in foreign lands! And I too like my art best after I haven't seen it in a while. Like Jez said there's often that feeling of "Did I do that?" Love the woman in the kimona.
