Time Away From Home, Maine Cabin by Joan Tavolott

The first time my family went on a vacation when I was a kid was up to Sebago Lake, Maine.
We stayed in a very rustic cabin (cold running water only, and no tub or shower). It did have a fireplace for the cold summer Maine nights. It was paradise! There were 5 cabins all filled with families and we had a fantastic time. Each cabin had their own rowboat, there was a fire pit down by the beach, and we had so much fun that we all cried when we had to leave.

We stayed for a week and went up there about 4 summers until the place was sold. I was  probably about 11/12 the first time we went. Here is the cabin and a bit of one of the rowboats. Lots of pine trees surrounded the cabin. I can still remember the smell of all the pine trees.

  1. Wow this is truly beautiful. I love the shadows you painted in this picture. It really does take on the essence of a cabin in the woods. Very well done.

  4. It sounds a perfect place for a holiday. I love the way your painting moves from the cool colour of the sky, warming up as it moves down towards the lake. A lovely drawing.

  5. Reminds me of a cabin I used to go to in the summer when I was a kid in Minnesota. Great memory of vacations.

  9. The art first: Awesome! Love how you work with shadows. I always am drawn to them, probably because I rarely think to do it in my own art making. Reminders. The MEMORIES: Growing up we took two vacations with our parents. On the first one to Los Angeles my dad had his first heart attack. And one other to Sonoma Mission Inn. I was around five then and ten in LA. After his heart attack we went on a trip to Lake Tahoe with my grand parents and an aunt. We too stayed in a cabin just like yours. In a little woodsy area. I remember the fear I had when my uncle took us out on the lake in a boat. I was terrified. And I remember being afraid of a mouse in the cabin. I was a very timid child. But I do remember the smell of the pine trees and liking being outdoors there. Thanks for (most of) the memories! ;-)

    1. How did you go from being such a timid child to going off on adventures on your own?

  10. Thanks so much everyone for all the comments. This cabin in Maine was special to the whole family and my parents even considered buying it when the woman wanted to sell them. But reality hit and they figured we wouldn't use it enough to make it worth buying, since my father only had 2 weeks vacation and this was an 8 hour drive.LOL Those vacations made all of us have a special place in our hearts for Maine. One of my sisters and her husband did move up to Maine.
