Time away from home, Impressions of Huang Shan by Margaret Coote

My ex-husband was from China, and we traveled there in 2006. We went to Huang Shan, a famous mountain. It was raining the day we got there (overnight train from Beijing) so the gondola was not running. Instead we climbed 6 straight hours to the top, in the rain. It was beautiful. At the top it was misty and foggy, and  you could see just a few feet in front of you. This is what I remember (there are steps carved into the rock all over the mountain):

I didn't have a camera, but I do have a lot of images imprinted in my mind. These pictures I doodled from my memory. Hope you don't mind the roughness.

We stayed in one of the many hotels at the top of the mountain, and the next day we hiked all over the mountain, along with TONS of other people (in China it can feel as if you are never alone!). It was still very foggy, so a lot of people were disappointed because you couldn't see the famous sights, various peaks and rock formations and views. Once in a while, though, the mist would clear for a moment and you'd get a view, and all the people around you would emit a collective "AH!" It was very satisfying.

  1. I think you captured your memories well, Margaret! These have a misty, blurred look to them like you described. So many of us have had wonderful opportunities to travel to some wonderful places. I am really enjoying hearing about where people have been.

    1. You must have some experience with it too? There is a totally unique feeling in China, always being part of a big group.

  5. What an interesting group we are with all our world wide travels and husbands from parts of the world far from our own! I like that you can draw from memories. I must give this more of a try!

  6. I like your memory doodles and the way you have selected only the most important elements needed to tell the story. The way you have shown the bushes each side of the steps has real texture. Sounds a very energetic trip - brings back memories of the days when we could climb for hours.

    1. Thank you, Jez. Actually one thing I didn't include in my story is that we had both sets of parents along with us, all of them over 60. When we arrived at the top, we were a soggy and exhausted group. But everyone made it!
