Yesterday when my sister, Michelle and I went into NYC to see the American Watercolor Society show we made sure to get there early enough to sketch. It was a cold, windy day and was too cold to sit outside in the morning. A friend had told me that there was a Whole Foods store right by Union Square Park. On the second floor they had a place where you could sit and have coffee or lunch with big windows that overlooked the park. We got there about 10:45 and found a table right by the window. We got some coffee and sketched away. A woman came over and asked if she could share our table and chatted with us for quite a while, enjoying watching us sketch. We were there sketching until about 12:15. You can see that spring has actually arrived in NYC and there are leaves on the trees. Of course when we woke up to go into the city on Wednesday there was an inch of snow and ice on the ground again. Luckily by the time we got to the city it had melted.
This is the view down into Union Square Park. There were people on cell phones, sitting on the steps, sitting on the benches, and just hanging out in small groups. It is usually guaranteed that whoever I start sketching moves two minutes later. LOL
This is so beautiful, Joan! You have captured the city in this one painting with the big buildings and the calmness in the park, colours are sunny, people, flowers, trees. I love this painting!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sirkka! It was fun to see what I could put into the scene. There was so much there.
DeleteThis is adorable! There are so many details and tings to see.
ReplyDeleteThank you Karla!
DeleteLovely 'complete' sketch. Architecture, nature and people! Is this A4? You have so much in it. Yes, the three rules of people-drawing are: they wriggle like an eel, someone stands in your line of vision or they walk away. I always enjoy the colours you use.
ReplyDeleteJez, thanks so much. This is about 5.5 x 8.5 inches (13.,9cm x 21.6cm) in a watercolor sketchbook.
DeleteAgain such a lovely sketch! Love the details and colors! Did you sketch directly with brush and watercolor or did you use pencil first?
ReplyDeleteThanks Mia! I did this directly with the brush and watercolor without any pencil first. Every once in a while I challenge myself that way.
DeleteI think this is perfect. Impressive that you paint directly with watercolor. When I do that I end up using linerwork at the end. Love this.
ReplyDeleteDynamite vista and vantage point from which to draw. You captured the scene below perfectly. Yes people move and you caught the hustle bustle of life there. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteVery lovely! Beautiful colors!
ReplyDeleteI love this. I knew it was NYC before I read your post. Been there only once, but still recognize certain landmarks.
