"Cambridge University", Away From Home, Lynn Cohen

Fast forward to 1963. I'm now 22 years old. I had traveled (after Mexico) to Europe (Spain, France, Israel, alone). I met my first husband in Israel, (1961) an Israeli living on a Kibbutz. A fast four month romance and wedding. A year later we took a trip to the US via Europe for him to meet my parents and vice verse. In London we stayed with his aunt and uncle. A side trip to Cambridge where we visited the university there. We met up with Stephen, a young African man who'd stayed at the Kibbutz a while, now a student at Cambridge. And we were photographed at the University with Stephen and we all made it into an issue of EBONY magazine that year!

I quickly sketched this section at the college with a Faber-Castell PITT artist pen, black, SX.
I made that bag I have slung over my shoulder at the Kibbutz in  a craft class. (Early Lynn Art).
(It was some form of stitching on a plastic netting material and then sewing the sides together, it was orange and brown). Memories!

    1. No, I created this drawing yesterday from an old photo from my travels yester-year (1963). There were no blogs in those days. It's amazing that we have them now and can revivify our lives this way, though isn't it? So glad you are enjoying them along with me, and sharing your own here (all of you). It's very gratifying.

    1. I have traveled a bit haven't I? It was a childhood dream and one I made come true over and over again. I still make travel plans! You will see more, just be patient. ;-)

  4. Great detail to your sketch of the college! It is funny to look at photos from those times and see that we always dressed up...men in suits and women in dresses or skirts. You have so many interesting stories. I tried to zoom in on the photo and see the detail to the bag. lol

    1. Thanks Joan. Yes, it was especially funny to see my husband, a Kibbutznik, farmer, who I'd never seen in a suit or tie suddenly wear them during these travels away from Israel. He would not be wearing a tie in Israel ever! No one does or did then. And me in a skirt, that too was an anomaly. Again today it is not a part of my normal wardrobe. The bag was sort of an Aztec design of triangles from point to wide to point again and in shades of orange, yellow, brown and black as I recall now.

  5. Wow Lynn, that's a terrific architectural drawing with so much detail, and - to me - such an 'English' subject.
