Away from Home, Still on Holidays, Sirkka Jalava

I will still show two sketches from Maldives I made. This is a big building for serving tourists with food, breakfast in the morning and dinner in the evening were included in the price of the visit and were served in this building with reed  roof, the walls were open in the dining room. During the day we could buy lunch in the bar if we were hungry (yes we were, at least the children were), coffee and refreshments. There was no alcohol.  The food was good, no problems. Fish often. In the open bar you could find suddenly a big crab under the table. The Maldives is (was, it can have changed during the years) a great place to spend holiday with children.

There was a bridge too, there came the boat we arrived with to the island Kuredu, and left too. Daily we saw the maledivian peoples boats taking tourists on fishing tour or on sightseeing to nearer islands. We won´t either fish or sightsee. There were no cars either naturally, the island is so little.
Here, on the right side you see a branch staying up from the water. It was a sign for their fish store for living fish. No money was handled during the visit, you payed everything when you left. It took around four hours from the island Kuredu by boat to the main island Male, where the capital and airport is. And the flight back to the north.

  1. That looks like a fun open-air dining room! I'm sure they had lots of fresh fish. It sounds like it was a fun place for families to vacation. I really like both sketches!

    1. Thank you Joan! It was really relaxing time there. Now vaccinations needed either. I am glad you like the sketches:)

  2. I love your colour palette Sirkka, and the way you have shown the clouds, particularly in the second sketch. The roof of the food building is huge - perhaps it was to ensure that it was as cool as possible inside. This sounds a lovely holiday. I think perhaps crabs under the table might have freaked me out just as much as ants on the table!

    1. Thank you Jez! You are surely right in that that kind of roof keeps the warmth out better than any other material, tiles or sheet of steel would not work at all. Crabs were allways carried back to the water. Ants I would not miss either!

  3. I love this theme, as the memories it evokes from us all are such good fodder for art making! I can become a child playmate with you on this island exploring it and going into the big tent to satisfy our hunger at mealtime after a long day of playing outdoors In the sun. Watch your toes, here comes a crab!!! Your watercolors bring it all to life so beautifully!

    1. Yes, Lynn, this theme has really evoked us to think. First I thaught, that I `ll not have anything to tell, but the more I remember the more comes up. The crabs were really of the big sort. Thank you so much, Lynn!

    1. Thank you Margaret! It was a good vacation, it was so different of the usual. I can tell you, that the travel with a rather small boat from the airport to the island on the open sea when there were rather big wawes was also an experience. Preferably I look at the sea from a pier like this.

    1. Thank you for that Fran! I hope you have enjoyed it. It would be much more to tell, but I think I leave the Maldives for now. Let´s have these tropical islands as a paradise in our minds:)
