Close to Home, by Joan Tavolott

I was visiting family for the last two days and didn't get to sketch anything...I don't know why since I always sketch when I'm around them. I was regretting not having my sketchbook with me Thursday night because we went to see my niece who is visiting from Australia do a dance piece in Harlem. We were in this funky club with all these characters that would have been perfect to sketch...it was too dark anyway and I wanted to observe. lol Then yesterday I drove home from NJ in very dense fog. By the time I got home this was what I wanted...a nice cup of tea to relax with. It is in my favorite Monet cup...oh no, I left out the crack in the mug! At some point the crack will be fatal and that will be the end of the cup.

  1. Oh how I know that feeling of regret. (see post below this one)... when the fatal blow comes you will take up mosaic work to save the cup fragments! Mark my word! In the meantime, it's a delightfully painted intact Monet cup, with shadows, spoon with light or sugar and tea bag!
A quite charming painting. I would LOVE to go to HARLEM!

  2. Beautiful watercolor! I love paintings within paintings, and this one has the Monet within your painting. It sounds like you had a wonderful visit with your family. I too hold on to cups until there's no choice but to say goodbye...

  3. This is beautiful, Joan, very soft and intimate. You can feel how temporary and treasured the cup is...

  4. I like your tea mug painting, especially I like the spoon on the tea bag... You are waiting that the water is warm enough.

  5. Lovely painting of your favourite mug. Isn't it nice to have that special cup/mug - hope this one lasts a long time for you :-)

  7. Lynn - Thank you. I would never have thought to save the pieces when it breaks. I'll have to remember. I've been a New Yorker all my life and had never been to Harlem until I went there with the NYC Urban Sketchers. Now I was back a second time. It is a happening place. lol

Lisa - Thank you. We had a nice visit. I wish it could have been longer.

    Margaret - Thanks so much!

Sirkka - LOL By the time I sketched the mug most of the tea was gone. Thanks.

Ann - Thanks. I take good care of it. I don't know how it cracked.

Giggles - I'll have to be careful with it. I never thought about it cracking and burning me. Thanks.

    Cris - Thank you!

  8. Why is it always our favorite ones that break? I guess because we use them so much. :) I can see why you like this one. It makes me want to go get a second cup of tea this morning.
