A few years ago my boyfriend and I spent three months split between Costa Rica and Nicaragua. We encountered these little crabs on a walk down through the rainforest in Costa Rica to a beautiful secluded cove. I believe they're known as 'halloween crabs'. They're very feisty - instead of running away, they'll square up to you, snapping their pincers as if to say 'you can't pick on me!'
Not only have they got great characters, they're lovely colours too and a lot of fun to paint. This is a watercolour on the back of a poster, the only thing I could find to paint on in the apartment!
