Vacations and Holidays, Galway Musician by Joan Tavolott

Last April my husband and I took a trip to Ireland. We spent a month there in various areas and enjoyed it tremendously. I sketched and painted everywhere we went. Our first stop was Galway and we were so impressed with all the music everywhere we went. This is a sketch of a Galway musician we saw playing on the street downtown. I did this today from one of the many, many photos I took.

Here is one of my sketches done in a pub on location while we were there. I painted small paintings during the day and most evenings we went out to hear music, and I took along a sketchbook each night. I would sketch in pencil and usually add the watercolors and ink when we got back to where we were staying. The lighting inside the pubs was not the greatest to see what I was sketching. lol

  2. I'll bet that music was fantastic. It's hard to keep from dancing to Irish music. Your sketch of the banjo player is great.

    1. Thanks, Fran. Ireland and music are perfect together. We bought several traditional Irish music CDs that we played all the time when we were driving around from town to town.

  3. In awe of your "in poor lighting" drawings of musicians. I know how hard that is to do! Love the just drawn from your photo banjo player! Love his red hair and beard! Looks like lots of fun had in Ireland!

    1. LOL Some nights I came home and had to do quite a bit of adjustments to the sketches...they would be so off. He did have hair that color too. It was so much fun except for driving there.

    1. Thanks, Ann. My husband doesn't like to fly, so if we are going someplace by plane he wants to stay a while before he has to get back on the plane. LOL

  9. People are not easy to sketch, but you did a fine job. They don't hold still unless you photograph them! I admire Lynn and you and people who can capture action figures. I mean people in motion.

  10. Thank you!!! I usually look for those people who look like they will be in that spot for a while. They may be eating or driking, or playing music. They usually stayed in one spot long after my hubby and I headed home for the night. LOL
